Tuesday was my friend Caitlin’s birthday so I wrote this song about her, her boyfriend Peter, and their cat, George Harrison. I play bass in a band with Peter, and the song describes going over to their apartment and chatting in the kitchen before practice. I really like literal lyric writing, and this was my stab at it, à la Kevin Ayers’ “Town Feeling,” or “Busy Doin’ Nothin’” by the Beach Boys.
The song was written and recorded over a 24 hour period at the Silver Door. Christian Simmons plays drums and percussion (thrill to the sound of the bongo workout during the outro vamp) and Pat Gregoire redeems the whole damn thing with his harmony-of-thirds bass clarinet part.
I met Caitlin and Peter because I like their band Freelove Fenner so much. I walked up to them two Halloweens ago outside of a party at the Silver Door and drunkenly introduced myself, rambling at length about how their band reminded me of Emitt Rhodes or whatever I was listening to at the time. Despite the, uh, excess of candor I showed that night, we struck up a friendship, and they’ve been extremely helpful, funny, kind people who have also been instrumental to getting our studio running. They’re also a lot of fun to sit around listening to records and drinking whiskey with. Anyways, they’re really great, their band is really great, and the song I wrote about them is sort of OK.
